The first official Olympic games took place in 776 BC. The Olympics were held in honor of Zeus, King of the gods. The games took place every 4 years. The Olympic games were more important than wars because they were a religious festival. The very first Olympics only had one event and it was a sprint from one end of the coliseum to the other. Gradually more were added which turned the 1 day event into a 4 day event consisting of wrestling, boxing, long jump, throwing the javelin and discus, and chariot racing. The ancient Olympics supposedly put the love of sports above the petty disputes of countries various politics. Whenever the Games were held a truce throughout the whole of Greece was declared.
